Alright. Still not reading the thread. I enjoyed Dune 1. It had a Star Wars vibe to it. Looking forward to Dune 2. What role did Sting play in the original movie?

At the end of the movie, wasn't Chany simply pissed that Paul had to marry Irulan for political reasons? Paul saw this as an immense sacrifice. He'd have to marry Irulan instead of Chany, the love of his life. But Chany simply saw this as treason, which is why she was pissed.
I think it's been 30 years since I read the books... trying to re-remember a lot. Chani knew Paul was a duke and royalty. She could never be his wife, but she could be his concubine. Lady Jessica was the concubine to Duke Leto. Technically Leto was unmarried. Most marriages among royalty aren't for love but for political alliance reasons. In the book Chani accepted the Irulan marriage but stated something along the lines that Irulan would never share his bed (or did Paul say that?). Irulan was purely a political marriage and nothing more, so Chani accepted these terms. Irulan didn't care for it as she would never have a child and her lineage would come to an end.

He played Feyd with a bit of craziness that was appropriate.

The original felt like it was trying to recruit people into a personality cult around the egomaniac hero. The opposite to anti-heroes in Mad Max and Water World.

"They never really explained why Alia was an "abomination", though. (Hint: without a developed personality, past memories could take her over. Being born a Reverend Mother was also a little part of this.) I couldn't stand Alia's creepy voice in the 1984 version, but it was hilarious when she growled with The Voice."

You missed it, near the end. They said the father was that fat dude...the same species as Feyd. I don't remember names in movies, sorry. I was thinking, why on earth would she sleep with that ugly guy?

Baby Alia's father is Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac). She is considered an abomination because Lady Jessica drank the water of life while she was pregnant, which unleashed Alia's psychic abilities, even though she's just a fetus. Doing that is against the Bene Gesserit's rules for some reasons. My guess would be, that it's probably because there are risks that a baby born with crazy psychic powers would turn evil and such.

Baron Harkonnen is Lady Jessica's father though, which isn't any less gross. Still, I guess he wasn't always that fugly... I mean, Feyd, his nephew, looks odd to us because he has no eyebrows... But for folks around him, he's probably pretty hot.

In the books it is explained as past genetic memories taking over the person and overwhelming them. Not all past genetic memories were from good people. Paul had this problem and aligned himself with a benign ancestor. In "Children Of Dune", Alia was overwhelmed by her grandfather, "the floating fatman", and had to be killed to prevent him from starting new wars and conquest in her body.

The Baron being Lady Jessica's father was essentially an event through regular rape and abuse of his power. Or maybe the Bene Gesserit sisterhood "arranged" it like for Feyd to keep the bloodline.

Ah, ok. I heard “her father” and thought they meant the baby’s.

Feyd was young and didn’t turn into a fat slob yet. 😂
